I recently built an adjustable power supply using custom components and materials. Here’s my detailed feedback:
Performance and Features:
The display is clear and of good quality, offering accurate readings with useful multi-function features.
The power supply provides a wide range of output voltages and passed all basic functionality tests without any issues.
It performs reliably and consistently, even under higher loads.
Power Source:
I used two 48V 20A SMPS units connected in series (resulting in 110V output: 55V + 55V). This configuration worked flawlessly within the specified tolerance range (+/- 15%).
Although input sources of this type aren’t readily available locally, the units I used were easy to integrate and performed perfectly.
Enclosure and Build:
Since enclosures for this kind of setup are not easily available, I built a custom enclosure using 5mm thick Bakelite (Hylem) sheets. It is durable, heat-resistant, and well-suited for the application.
The overall design ensures excellent durability and adequate protection for the components.
Cooling:
The cooling system works effectively, with one fan directing airflow towards the SMPS heatsink and another fan acting as an exhaust. This setup prevents overheating and maintains stable operation.
Shipping and Availability:
The key components were shipped quickly to India, which was a major advantage given the limited local availability of specialized parts.
Overall Experience
This project resulted in a highly functional and versatile adjustable power supply. The combination of custom-built and sourced components worked seamlessly. I’m especially pleased with the quality of the display, the wide output range, and the robust performance of the SMPS units.
